Double Eyelid Surgery

What is Botox?

Botox, or botulinum toxin, is an injectable treatment that is primarily targeted to treat wrinkles, fine lines and creases on the face. It can also be used as a non-permanent facial contouring treatment to slim down your profile. Botox is more widely known as an effective anti-aging product for improving the appearance of your skin. Botox is able to treat signs of advanced aging as it promotes collagen production and skin elasticity. In Singapore, Botox is used to temporarily give patients a younger and tighter look.
Monolids, or single eyelids, are a common feature of Asians. While monolids can be very attractive and seen on many Korean celebrities, many of us still desire double eyelids for bigger, fresher-looking eyes. This can be achieved through double eyelid surgery.

What is Double Eyelid Surgery?

Double eyelid surgery is a type of surgery that creates creases in the upper eyelids, thus creating double eyelids and a bigger appearance of the eyes. There are two main types of double eyelids surgery, incisional and non-incisional; both can be completed as out-patient procedures, which means it is just a day surgery, you will not have to stay overnight at the hospital.

How does Double Eyelid Surgery works?

Although both types of double eyelid surgeries produce the same eventual result of a double eyelid, their methods are very different.

Incisional double eyelid surgery

  • Also known as the ‘cutting method’
  • The site is carefully measured and marked
  • Local anaesthesia is administered
  • Small incisions are made at the site
  • Excess skin, fat, and muscle are surgically removed to create a crease
  • Wound is closed using skin glue or sutures

This method is best for individuals with excess skin, fat, and muscle to remove. It is a permanent, non-reversible procedure.

Non-incisional double eyelid surgery

  • Also known as the buried suture technique
  • The site is carefully measured and marked
  • Local anaesthesia is administered
  • Small punctures are made along the marked area
  • Sutures are weaved through the punctures and tightened
  • Once the desired crease is formed, the sutures will remain there for life

This method is best for individuals with no excess skin, fat, and muscle to remove. It is not permanent and can be reversed by removing the sutures.

What are the benefits?

Double eyelid surgeries can be performed for both cosmetic and functional reasons, and whatever the reason and motivation for your double eyelid surgery, the benefits are undeniable.

The many benefits include:

  • More youthful appearance
  • Appear less tired
  • Improve eyesight if vision was impaired by eyelids
  • Increase self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Relieve eye discomfort from inward turning eyelashes
  • Allows for symmetrical eyelids

What conditions can Double Eyelid Surgery treat?

Besides aesthetic purposes, double eyelid surgery can correct a number of issues such as:

  • Asymmetrical eyelids
  • Excess skin on the eyelids that result in impaired vision
  • Puffy eyelids making you appear tired
  • Saggy or drooping eyelids
  • Baggy eyelids
  • Trichiasis or inward turning eyelashes

What results can I expect?

Immediately after the surgery, you may experience some issues with your eyes such as:

  • Blurred or double vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Mild pain and discomfort
  • Numbness in your eyelids
  • Swelling
  • Bruising

These should subside with time as you recover.

You should also avoid strenuous activities, exercising, sun and wind exposure, and activities that dry your eyes such as reading, watching tv, or using your computer and mobile phone. Most importantly, do not rub your eyes as your sutures could tear. You may be administered antibiotics to prevent an infection.

Once you have recovered, you can expect an incisional double eyelid surgery to last a lifetime as it is permanent while a non-incisional double eyelid surgery can last for 10 years.

What are the possible complications or risks associated with Double Eyelid Surgery?

  • Adverse reaction to anaesthesia such as breathing difficulties and problems with heart rate and blood pressure
  • Post-surgery infection
  • Temporary or permanent issues with vision
  • Asymmetrical eyelids post-surgery
  • Visible puncture marks
