Eye Bag Removal

What is Botox?

Botox, or botulinum toxin, is an injectable treatment that is primarily targeted to treat wrinkles, fine lines and creases on the face. It can also be used as a non-permanent facial contouring treatment to slim down your profile. Botox is more widely known as an effective anti-aging product for improving the appearance of your skin. Botox is able to treat signs of advanced aging as it promotes collagen production and skin elasticity. In Singapore, Botox is used to temporarily give patients a younger and tighter look.

What are Eye Bags?

One of the first things people notice about us are our eyes and unfortunately, it is also the first place to show signs of aging. Our eyes are supported by layers of muscles, fats, skin, and other tissues. As we age, the muscles and skin weaken and start to lose their flexibility. As such, the fats that support our eyes begin to move forward into the lower eyelids causing them to bulge, resulting in eye bags.

What causes Eye Bags?

Although the main cause of eye bags are muscle weakness and excess fat, there are several factors that can contribute to and worsen the appearance of eye bags, such as:

  • Fluid retention: also known as edema, fluid retention can cause excess fluid to gather around your eyes giving them a puffy appearance.
  • Lack of sleep: results in fluid and blood to accumulate around your eyes, leading to the formation of eye bags.
  • Genetics: if you have a sibling or parent with eye bags, you are at an increased risk of developing eye bags as well.
  • Allergies: having allergies can cause your sinus cavity to be clogged up, giving your eyes a puffy appearance.
  • Smoking: nicotine in cigarettes can disrupt your sleep and eventually lead to fluid and blood retention around your eyes.
  • Medical conditions: some medical conditions such as renal disease, dermatitis, etc., can cause eye bags.

What is Eye Bag Removal?

Eye bags can be removed surgically or non-surgically.

  • Surgical eye bag removal
Also known as a lower blepharoplasty or scarless eye bag removal, surgical eyebag removal removes excess fat and skin by making an incision on the inside of the lower eyelid. This method does not leave any visible scars. A lower blepharoplasty is a permanent plastic surgery procedure which will leave you looking youthful and vibrant.
  • Non-surgical eye bag removal
Non-surgical eye bag removal consists of energy-based laser treatments, dermal fillers, and botox. These treatment options are only viable for individuals with a mild case of eye bags and will require multiple sessions for results to show.

How does Eye Bag Removal work?

Eye bag removal surgery is performed in the following steps:

  • Anaesthesia (local or general) is administered to minimise pain and discomfort.
  • An incision is made on the inside of the lower eyelid.
  • Excess fat and skin are removed.
  • The incision is closed using stitches which must be removed approximately one week after the procedure.
  • You will be kept for observation and until the anaesthesia has worn off.
  • Bruising and swelling is to be expected and should last 1-2 weeks.

Eye bag removal surgery is a day-surgery. This means that you will be able to go home on the same day of your procedure.
