Hair Transplant

What is Botox?

Botox, or botulinum toxin, is an injectable treatment that is primarily targeted to treat wrinkles, fine lines and creases on the face. It can also be used as a non-permanent facial contouring treatment to slim down your profile. Botox is more widely known as an effective anti-aging product for improving the appearance of your skin. Botox is able to treat signs of advanced aging as it promotes collagen production and skin elasticity. In Singapore, Botox is used to temporarily give patients a younger and tighter look.

What is a Hair Transplant?

Hair transplant is a common method in Singapore to improve your hairline with hair that is harvested from healthy areas of your scalp. Different degrees of balding can be addressed and both men and women can be candidates for hair transplantation.

Many patients in Singapore suffer from hair loss due to genetics (alopecia areata) or aging. Hair transplants are a safe and lasting way to treat common hair loss problems such as male female-pattern baldness.

How does a Hair Transplant work?

For hair transplant surgeries in Singapore, up to 6,000 hair grafts can be transplanted in total depending on the patient’s needs. The doctor will first remove grafts (follicular units that also contain sebaceous glands, nerves and muscle) from healthy scalp at the back of the head (known as the donor area).

After assessing, Dr Janna will tell you where the hair will come from (donor site) and where the hair will be placed (recipient site). On the day of the operation, the donor site is trimmed and grafts are individually removed. Where possible, Dr Janna will make sure that the donor site is concealed by remaining hair.

There are a few techniques for hair transplantation. Dr Janna has performed both Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (or strip technique) and routinely does more FUE now.

Donor grafts (or "strands") are examined and relocated to thinning or bald spots on the head. Hair grafts can be extracted as slit (4 to 10 hairs per graft) or micrografts (1 to 2 hairs per graft) and these grafts will be carefully placed into tiny holes. The whole process takes a few hours (depending on how much hair we are transplanting and can be done under both local anaesthesia or sedation.

Why a Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant is a recommended procedure for those who have not seen results from hair loss treatments (or for patients who do not want to try medications). These include topical applications such as oral Finasteride (propecia), Dutasteride and Minoxidil, as well as energy based therapy (eg. laser therapy).

As your new hair grows, you will feel more confident in your appearance and gradually be able to show off a fuller head of hair. You can also undergo a hair transplant to alter the shape of your hairline.

Some benefits of a hair transplant include:

  • Increased confidence
  • Natural-looking hairline
  • Guaranteed hair growth

What results can I expect?

After a hair transplant, there can be some hair loss for the first 2 to 3 weeks to allow for new hair to grow. This will continue to take place over the next few months. Many patients will see around 70% of hair growth after 6 to 9 months.

Who is suitable?

1. Men or women with thinning scalp.
2. Those who have not seen results from other treatment options.
3. Those who want to make a rapid improvement to their hairline and appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hair transplants do patients need?
Hair transplants are a permanent way in Singapore to recreate hair density on a patient’s scalp where it is lacking. The actual number of grafts/strands required depends on how advanced your hair loss is. After your consultation, Dr Janna will be able to give you an indication of how many strands you will need.

Most people prefer to have all the hair transplanted in one sitting. Some people choose to split it into separate sessions.
Is a hair transplant safe?
As a hair transplant procedure in Singapore may involve a minimally invasive surgery, it can come with risks. These include bruising around the eyes, numbness on the treated areas of the scalp. It is important to consult an experienced doctor to ensure a worry-free procedure. Patients who have a history of hair loss due to treatments such as chemotherapy may experience more hair loss after transplantation.
Is a hair transplant painful?
During hair transplant surgery, local anaesthesia will be given according to the area that needs to be treated. Sometimes, sedation may be used. The procedure itself should not cause any pain while the grafts are being taken. Pain or swelling on the forehead and eyes may appear after surgery. It will likely go away in a few days or with medication.
Does a hair transplant have any downtime?
A hair transplant surgery is an outpatient procedure that takes around 4 to 8 hours to be completed. There will be some downtime to allow for scab healing and prevent any risk of infection. Be sure to avoid strenuous activities until 5 to 7 days have passed after undergoing a hair transplant. This means you should avoid driving and exercising. It will take about 2 weeks to recover from a hair transplant procedure and resume all of your normal activities.
