Labiaplasty

What is Botox?

Botox, or botulinum toxin, is an injectable treatment that is primarily targeted to treat wrinkles, fine lines and creases on the face. It can also be used as a non-permanent facial contouring treatment to slim down your profile. Botox is more widely known as an effective anti-aging product for improving the appearance of your skin. Botox is able to treat signs of advanced aging as it promotes collagen production and skin elasticity. In Singapore, Botox is used to temporarily give patients a younger and tighter look.

What is Labiaplasty?

Despite being a common cosmetic surgical procedure, “labiaplasty” is relatively unknown. Better known as vulval surgery or vaginal rejuvenation, a labiaplasty involves reducing or enlarging the size of the inner tissues of the female genitalia known as labia minora.

There are numerous reasons a woman might want to undergo labiaplasty. It is mainly done for cosmetic reasons, but sometimes it is done for functional reasons such as discomfort and hygiene purposes.

Why get a Labiaplasty?

Although a labiaplasty is commonly done for cosmetic purposes, it is also done to help ease physical discomfort, especially for women with enlarged labias. A labiaplasty can help restore comfort and normal function.

Aside from these, there are numerous benefits to getting a labiaplasty – for both cosmetic and medical purposes.

  • Increased Confidence and Sexual Pleasure
A woman’s confidence can be greatly affected if she is not comfortable with how her labia looks and can affect intimacy. A rejuvenated labia can help improve a woman's confidence by altering how her labia looks.
  • Improve Overall Hygiene and Health
Excess tissue can be a breeding ground for bacteria to thrive in. Women with oversized labia are more susceptible to urinary tract infections and have a high risk of UTIs, amongst other health concerns.
  • Cosmetic Reasons
Some women do not like the appearance of their labia and have difficulty wearing clothes to provide adequate cover resulting in an unsightly "camel toe".

How is Labiaplasty performed?

Depending on the reasons a patient is having labiaplasty done, the procedure may vary slightly.

If a women is considering labiaplasty, there are a few surgical techniques like:

  • Trim Procedure
The surgeon removes excess tissue from the outer edge of one or both sides of the labia minora.
  • Wedge Procedure
This involves removing a wedge-shaped piece of tissue from the inner areas or both sides of the labia minora.
  • Composite Reduction Labiaplasty
This creates separate labial segments and allows for shaping and reduction of the labia minora.

Dr Janna may use either of these technique or a modified version to ensure that there is a slight hooding over the clitoris along with an aesthetic correction of the labial enlargement.

  • Surgery
Surgery is done in the operating theatre within the clinic to ensure utmost privacy. The operation takes about an hour and is performed either under local or general anaesthesia. All patients go home shortly after the surgery.
  • Incisions
Incisions are typically closed with dissolvable stitches that dissolve over time (and so will not need to be removed).
  • Non-Surgical Labial Rejuvenation
Such techniques typically involve the use of energy-based devices. One frequently performed method by Dr Janna is using plasma to deliver energy to achieve near total labial rejuvenation. This process takes about 15 minutes and is well tolerated by patients.

Conversely, labial enlargement involves taking a small amount of fat from a different part of the body and injecting it into the labia majora. An alternative to this would be injecting hyaluronic acid into the labia majora.

Once all surgical processes have been completed, the incisions are then closed with dissolvable sutures that will not need to be removed upon full recovery. The surgical site is covered with a dressing until it heals completely.

Through surgical or non-surgical methods, Dr Janna aims to obtain slight hooding over the clitoris along with an aesthetically pleasing labia.

What results can I expect from a Labiaplasty?

A patient who has successfully undergone labiaplasty can expect to feel mild discomfort for the first week or two after the surgery. Patients will need to abstain from strenuous exercise and/or sexual intercourse for the next 4 to 6 weeks to ensure adequate time for the surgical site to heal.

The reduction procedure is the most common vaginal rejuvenation procedure done. Most women who have undergone a labiaplasty are very satisfied with their results.

Most patients report that:

  • Their labia no longer hangs down and has less excess tissue
  • Their labia looks more aesthetically pleasing
  • No discomfort such as tugging and twisting that often happens prior to getting labiaplasty done

Full results from labiaplasty can be seen a few months after a labiaplasty.
